In 21 years, I worked part-time for close to a dozen different employers. After every job, I learned at least a few valuable lessons, acquired new skills, and died a little on the inside.
I’ve waited on tables and ran take-out at a Chinese restaurant. I was a sullen teenager behind a over-caffeinated, overly- cheery-sales-associate-mask at Old Navy. I gutted houses, played the bitc- I mean, intern role at Maxim Magazine. I was a Resident Assistant for 14-year olds in upstate-New York and LA, 17-year olds in Nanjing, China, and college students at Rutgers University. And in case anyone’s counting, the 14-year olds were the most intelligent, the 17-year olds made me consider a vasectomy, and college students are the most childish.
I simultaneously held three positions throughout college. For the last two years, it’s been four: residence life at Rutgers, interning with Maxim Magazine Online, consulting at a computer lab, and editor for a college magazine.
Post-graduation, I will be completely and utterly unemployed for the first time since I was 14. I’m writing my first book, a collection of humor essays on the Asian American experience in white suburbia. I’m also traveling, and transitioning towards a minimalistic lifestyle. Since none of those involve seeking or obtaining employment, I hope to remain far away from the 9 to 5 life for a long time.
This blog is about my freelancing pursuits and career divergences.

Hey man, i got your mass email thing. It’s great to hear from you. Awesome writing, as always– a guy like you should have no trouble getting where you want to be.
I’ve got my own little blog going, just for the random thoughts and rants that weren’t worthy of actual publication: [ http://toastinthemachine.wordpress.com/ ]. Along those lines, sorry i never got around to getting into the Inside Beat… This biochemistry and linguistics thing eats up the majority of my time. I try to keep my interest in writing going whenever i can, though, despite being neck deep in various sciences.
Anyway man, i’ll be sure to keep reading as long as you keep writing. Take care and best of luck.

I’m freelancing for 2 years, 1 year ‘fulltime’. It is hard for me to imagine I’m returning to 9to5 from own will (but You know, maybe I will have to). I have to say that freelancing is not for everyone.
But – if You will keep trying – You will succeed. I have recently read great quote:
I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
